Questions & Answers about Challenger Products

    1. Is the Automatic clarifier compatible with all sanitizers and pool chemicals? It is compatible with all treatment chemicals.

    2. Is the Automatic clarifier an accepted method of sanitzing pools and spas? Absolutely. 18,000 Automatic clarifiers have been sold since 1983 and they are sertified by ETL against rigorous UL and NSF standards for "supplements sanitation". Automatic clarifiers are widely used by high-end builders throughout the USA on residential, commercial, institutional and public pools and spas - wherever exceptional water quality and absolute reliability are essential.

    3. How much does the Automatic clarifier reduce chlorine? As much as 90%. It dramatically improves the efficiency of all sanitizers - by reducing "demand", i.e. contaminants are removed by flocculation and filter flow, and not by chemical treatment.

    4. Do I still need to shock? Yes, but not nearly as often (depends on bather load and water conditions).

    5. Does it get rid of algae? The Automatic clarifier is an algistat, not an algicide - meaning that it can help inhibit algae growth. If you already have an algae problem, use polyquat 60 or another non-metal based algicide to solve the problem. Then the Automatic clarifier will help prevent the problem from recurring.

    6. Does the Automatic clarifier put metals in the water? No. It puts nothing at all into the water. It simply exchanges charged particles (ions) with contaminants to make them filterable.

    7. Where does it get installed? Unlike other sanitizers, Automatic clarifiers are installed before the filter. It will take a plumber or an electrician only an hour to install.

    8. What's the warranty? The element has a minimum expected life of four years. Check with us for details of warranty.

    9. What kind of maintenance is needed? Water hardness determines whether - or when - maintenance is requirred. Example: in the Northeast, visual inspection every 3-4 years is all that's necessary. In Arizona, where hardness levels are high, the element may need to be cleaned every 24 months (simple 10 minute process; no special tools or complicated disassembly needed). Units have been known to last as long as ten years.

    10. Are any adjustments needed? No. Automatic clarifiers are completely automatic. Just set it and forget it.

    11. How do I know if it's working? If the display is lit, Automatic clarifier is working. The green light tells you the LCD is displaying current water temperature; the red light tells you the LCD is displaying "drive output" to the element. Also, if for any reason Automatic clarifier isn't working you will notice chlorine demand increasing dramatically.

    12. How do I know if the element needs changing? The element has a built in audible alarm like a smoke alarm. It will sounds when the element is completely depleted (it's designed to last a minimum of four years).

    13. Can the alarm go off prematurely? Only if the pump has lost its prime. Occasionally, the alarm may go off if the filter needs back washing.

    14. What are the best balance parameters for the Automatic clarifier? PH 7.2-7.8; TA 80-120; Calcium Hardness: 250-750; Stabilizer (cyanuric acid): 30-100 ppm; chlorine: 0.4 ppm (or bromine: 0.8 ppm).

    15. Can it stain pools? Absolutely not. The Automatic clarifier does its work before the filter and adds nothing to the pool water.

    16. What is flocculation? Flocculation is the coalescence of a finely divided precipitate into larger particles.

    17. What is precipitation? Precipitation is the formation of an insoluble solid by a reaction which occurs in solution. It is widely used for the separation and identification of substances in chemical processes and analyses.

    18. What is coagulation? Coagulation is the precipitation of colloids from solutions, particularly of proteins.

    19. What is the history of the Automatic clarifier? From 1986 to 1993 it was known as the "Challenger Series" and was designed to have an output of 60-75 milliamps. It was a "dual phase" product, i.e., both "flocculating" (referred to as "coagulating" in '93 literature) and adding some residual to water. Nevertheless, three distinguishing features of the present Automatic clarifier product were already present (pre-filter installation, low power output, focus on "coagulation" not residual), NSF had already advised the company that it should support development of ITS OWN STANDARD, because the "Challenger Series" was CLEARLY different from ionizers specified by the NSF 50 Standard.

Beginning in 1994, the early "Challenger Series" was re-designed to have a lower output of 15 milliamps. This effectively rendered 1993 literature obsolete and any comparisons to ionization irrelevant, because the output was now too low - although Cation Exchange (a well respected and established aqueous sanitation technology) may have been an appropriate description. However, the product's name, "Challenger Series", was not changed until 1997 owing to the death in 1995 of the company's co-founder and the temporary suspension of operations which were resumed in mid-1997 with the launch of SDI and Millenium.

    20. How does it work with Fiberstars & Fountainhead? It's compatible with everything except biguanides like Baquacil and Softswim. In fact, it helps remove copper levels resulting from use of these "passive ionizers" like Fiberstars or Nature 2 which inject metal ions into water.
